Seirei Christopher University Email Newsletter No.2 (September 2020)

1. Classes 授業等
1a. Professor Shinya Iida is working on a lesson that incorporates a new lesson research method (Department of Child Education and Social Work)
This is the second year since the Department of Child Education and Social Work established an elementary school teacher training program. Two thirds of the second-year students have registered for classes to receive an elementary school teacher qualification.

Professor Shinya Iida was appointed to the university in 2019 after gaining experience as a principal of an elementary school in Shizuoka prefecture. Since then, he has been enthusiastically engaged in educational activities so that students can develop the ability to teach and respond appropriately to daily educational issues with confidence when they become elementary school teachers.

In the class, "Teaching Methods for Mathematics", second-year students examined problems that were common “stumbling blocks” for young learners as identified by a national academic ability survey. The students considered teaching methods to help learners overcome these stumbling blocks that addressed the “five areas of childcare” (i.e. physical and mental health, relationships, environment, language, and expression). After receiving guidance from the teacher, the students worked on a mock lesson that made use of this "stumbling block" analysis and textbook research. Then, the students were divided into three groups by elementary school grade, and they worked on improving their teaching abilities by conducting: a three-minute introduction of teaching material research, a twenty-minute class, and a ten-minute research discussion. For the research discussion, they adapted the post-match analysis used to improve future play in shogi (Japanese chess) and go (a Japanese board game).

In the past, other lesson research methods, such as one called "stop motion" based on reflection, have been introduced. However, this time the blackboard was used like a shogi board, and the "next move" in lesson development was examined. This may be the first time this method of class research has been used anywhere in the world.

Professor Iida presented this new lesson research method, called "Blackboard Post-Match Analysis”, at the Mathematics Education Workshop held by the Japan Society of Mathematical Education on Sunday, July 26. His workshop attracted many participants.

Professor Iida said, “The most important things for elementary school teachers are to have teaching skills in the classroom and to enhance children’s motivation to learn. I hope you’ll consider joining our department to acquire these skills.”

2a. Online Meeting with Seirei Asha Bhavan, India (Department of Child Education and Social Work)
We had an online meeting with Seirei Asha Bhavan in India as a part of international exchange. A third-year student from the department participated. This meeting was done as a replacement of “International Social Welfare Practicum” because the students could not go to India due to the pandemic.

(About online meeting)
Mr. Dilu George Varghese who is a son of the founder of Seirei Asha Bhavan explained about the facility. He showed us inside of the facility via video camera and explained about its foundation. The student asked questions in English about social conditions, the current conditions of facility, and the caste system in India.

With the development of the Internet and media devices, it seems that the students were able to connect with people overseas and deepen their learning while avoiding various risks. We hope we can actually visit the facility to deepen this learning next time.
